What 'allergy-grade' actually means
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recommends portable HEPA cleaners with a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage. A 400 sq ft living room therefore needs 267 CFM smoke CADR. Only the Core 400S (260) and Core 600S (410) hit that target.
Filter variants for allergies
Levoit sells three drop-in filter variants for the Core 300/300S: Toxin Absorber, Smoke Remover and Pet Allergy. The Pet Allergy variant uses an antibacterial coating. The Core 400S has a similar lineup.
Pollen season setup
Run the purifier on auto mode 24/7 during peak season (April-June and September). Keep windows closed during high-pollen mornings (5-10am). Change the HEPA filter every 6 months instead of 9-12 to prevent loaded-filter bypass.
Asthma - the noise tradeoff
Asthma patients often need to sleep with the purifier in the bedroom. The Core 600S delivers strong CADR but at 25 dB sleep mode - fine for most. If you are noise-sensitive, the Core 300 at 24 dB is the safer pick even though CADR is lower.
