Should I buy a generic third-party filter?
Short answer: not on the Core 400S, Vital 200S or Core 600S - the honeycomb carbon stage is hard to replicate and we've measured CADR drops of 15-25% on third-party clones. On the Core 200S, Core 300 and LV-H132 the filter is simpler and generics from Future Way, Isinlive and Colorfullife perform within 5% of genuine. Buy generic only if it has visible H13 markings and a verified CADR test report.
How to know when to replace
- Filter indicator light - on smart Levoits, it's based on runtime hours, not actual loading.
- Visible darkening - the white HEPA media should still be white-ish. Yellow or grey throughout = replace.
- CADR drop - if your auto-mode purifier suddenly runs at higher speeds for the same task, the filter is loaded.
- Smell - used carbon releases trapped odors back. If your purifier "smells dusty", replace.
Why filters are the real cost of ownership
A Core 400S costs about $50/year in filters; a Core 600S about $55/year; a Vital 200S about $45/year (offset by the washable pre-filter). Over a 5-year ownership window, filters cost roughly the same as the original purifier. Factor this in when comparing Levoit to Coway, Blueair or Winix.
